Early Burn Button Concept Sketches

During my freshman year of highschool, I was offered an internship at a dynamic biomedical startup. Within this intellectually stimulating environment, I collaborated closely with a team of graduate students, each diligently working on their individual projects aimed at innovating surgical equipment. My specific task involved the design of a 3D-printed button, engineered to attach to surgical mesh. This invention was particularly tailored to safeguard areas affected by third-degree burns, offering enhanced protection during reconstructive surgeries.
In the realm of burn treatment, surgeons frequently rely on stapling protective mesh to the skin to prevent it from moving. My innovation during the design process was the repurposing of EKG pads as button studs. This creative adaptation allowed for the mass production of these buttons, facilitating their distribution to surgeons across the West Coast. The designs showcased below represent the culmination of this project, a blend of practicality and innovation. These designs have received patent approval.
