GOPRO PARALLAX

2025

Wanting to expand on the Polaroid Parallax idea, I set out to develop a handheld digital camera that could replicate the “wiggle effect,” and also enable panoramas, stereoscopic video, and VR-friendly playback. I first built a prototype using discarded iphone 7’s, mounting it to RISD‘s robotic arm. I then got to work on the handheld version.

Working with my friend Ryan, we quickly realized the fastest and most reliable path was to leverage existing camera modules with the right pinouts and imaging processing pipeline. Enter: the GoPro Bones.

Using four ultra-light GoPros originally designed for FPV drones, Ryan handled the electronics and synchronization while I designed and fabricated the camera enclosure. Below are process shots, renderings, and the final prototype.
