BRONZE SD
Investment casting, also known as lost-wax casting is the process of injecting wax into a silicone negative, and then recasting the wax positive.
As the wax melts away, the desired metal takes its place, leaving you with a metal positive. Learning about this process through a Junior studio at RISD, I designed a cylindrical cap-and-container system that threads together via 3D-printed inserts, each holding 10 SD cards. My first attempt was an utter failure – the silicone mold I made from a 3D print was too large and complex for wax injection, resulting in inconsistent pieces. Each piece was too unrefined and inconsistent. And so, I tried a different approach. I redesigned the bronze sd case, as a four-part negative mold for direct wax injection. Goodbye silicone. The following attempt resulted in a perfect wax structure, ready for casting.
